Petrol, diesel and automotive LPG prices are not regulated in Australia. Automotive LPG prices were deregulated in 1991, and petrol and diesel prices were deregulated in 1998.

However, in the interests of consumers and competitive markets, the ACCC continues to monitor fuel prices in Australia’s largest capital cities and more than 190 regional locations.

Under the current direction from the Treasurer the ACCC has been asked to monitor the prices, costs and profits relating to the supply of unleaded petroleum products and related services in the petroleum industry in Australia for two years, effective from 20 December 2017.

The ACCC also prepares reports on particular issues of consumer interest or industry significance.
