On 20 August 2018, the Treasurer directed the ACCC to hold a public inquiry that will monitor the prices, profits and margins in the supply of electricity in the National Energy Market.
The ACCC is required to provide its first report by 31 March 2019 and at least every six months thereafter until the conclusion of the inquiry on 31 August 2025. It will also provide information to the market from time to time, as appropriate.
The inquiry’s first report was published on 29 March 2019. This report sets out the ACCC’s analytical framework for monitoring and provides information about expectations of market outcomes and market participant behaviour.
For future reports, the ACCC will be using its compulsory information gathering powers where necessary, together with publicly available information and analysis performed by other bodies, to inform its monitoring.
