The ACCC’s role in energy covers market inquiries in relation to the electricity and gas sectors. The ACCC also enforces the Competition and Consumer (Industry Code – Electricity Retail) Regulations 2019. In addition, the ACCC is also working on a Consumer Data Right in relation to energy.

Electricity market monitoring 2018-2025 Inquiry Ongoing

On 20 August 2018, the Treasurer directed the ACCC to hold a public inquiry that will monitor the prices, profits and margins in the supply of electricity in the National Energy Market. The inquiry will provide its first report by 31 March 2019 and at least every six months thereafter until the conclusion of the inquiry on 31 August 2025.

Gas inquiry 2017-2020 Inquiry Ongoing
Commenced 19 April 2017

On 19 April 2017 the Australian Government directed the ACCC to conduct a wide-ranging inquiry into the supply of and demand for wholesale gas in Australia, as well as to publish regular information on the supply and pricing of gas for the next three years.

Electricity supply & prices inquiry Inquiry Finalised
Final report published

On 27 March 2017, the Treasurer directed the ACCC to hold an inquiry into the supply of retail electricity and the competitiveness of retail electricity prices.

East Coast Gas Inquiry 2015 Inquiry Finalised
April 2016

On 13 April 2015 the Minister for Small Business directed the ACCC to hold an inquiry into the competitiveness of the wholesale gas industry.
