On 2 October 2018, the Treasurer, the Hon Josh Frydenberg MP, issued a notice approving the ACCC to hold an inquiry into the supply of foreign currency conversion services in Australia.

Electricity market monitoring 2018-2025 Energy Inquiry Ongoing

On 20 August 2018, the Treasurer directed the ACCC to hold a public inquiry that will monitor the prices, profits and margins in the supply of electricity in the National Energy Market. The inquiry will provide its first report by 31 March 2019 and at least every six months thereafter until the conclusion of the inquiry on 31 August 2025.

On 26 November 2017, the Australian Government announced the introduction of a consumer data right in Australia. The consumer data right will improve consumers’ ability to compare and switch between products and services. It will also encourage competition between service providers, leading not only to better prices for customers but also more innovative products and services.

Digital platforms inquiry Media Inquiry Ongoing

On 4 December 2017, the then Treasurer, the Hon Scott Morrison MP, directed the ACCC to conduct an inquiry into digital platforms. The inquiry looked at the effect that digital search engines, social media platforms and other digital content aggregation platforms have on competition in media and advertising services markets. In particular, the inquiry looked at the impact of digital platforms on the supply of news and journalistic content and the implications of this for media content creators, advertisers and consumers.

On 25 May 2017, the Australian Government directed the ACCC to conduct a wide-ranging inquiry into the supply of home, contents and strata insurance in Northern Australia.
